Integrated operation against fish bombing in Semporna
Semporna: Efforts to curb the catching and selling of bombed fish requires the cooperation of all parties through the National Blue Ocean Strategy. Mohd Rizal Socradi, an officer from the Fisheries Department enforcement unit here, believes that the involvement of more parties would have a positive impact on such efforts.

"Commitment and cooperation from all parties to address these issues can be shown through the National Blue Ocean Strategy, for example through the implementation of integrated operations to curb such activities," he said.

He said this in a press statement on the In-Service Training of the fisheries and the marine police here on May 10 and May 11.

A briefing was also presented by Tawau Fisheries Main Base Chairman Carthage Joe Quadra on offences under the Fisheries Act 1985 in conjunction with the programme.

Mohd Rizal said the integrated operation carried out in conjunction with the In-Service Training was led by Semporna Marine Police Commanding Officer ASP Safardi Abd Samad and 22 officers as well as personnel, while the Semporna Fisheries was led by Insp. Azri Suboh as the Field Operations Officer.

He said the operation involved on-site inspection of the landing and sale of fish at the Semporna fish market which saw the seizure of 60 kilogrammes of suspected bombed fish.

"The operations also focused on the waters of Silapag canal, Pulau Denawan, Pulau Ligitan, Pulau Kapalai and Pulau Mabul," he said.

He said that they also found several sacks suspected to contain turtle bones and have taken samples, adding that the matter was also referred to the Tawau Wildlife Department. - Lagatah Toyos
