Kota Baru: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has traced the involvement of foreign nationals especially from West Asia in syndicates selling cloned luxury and cheap cars in the country. Its Director-General Datuk Seri Nadzri Siron said initial investigation found that the syndicates would later sell the vehicles at a much cheaper price than the market price to foreigners residing in this country.

"The syndicates sell various types of cloned vehicles such as Toyotas, Mitsubishis and Hondas at prices as low as RM20,000 to RM30,000," he told reporters after the Excellent Service Award presentation ceremony for the Eastern Zone in Pengkalan Chepa, Monday.

Also present were Kelantan RTD Director Mahasan Mustapa, Pahang RTD Director Datuk Mark Ujin and Terengganu RTD Director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie.

Last Tuesday, Selangor imported striker Francis Forkey Doe was fined RM6,000 by the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court after pleading guilty to owning a cloned BMW 325i car.

Meanwhile, the RTD will enhance the use of technology in the delivery system in an effort to check corruption and abuse of power in enforcement agencies.

Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said the use of technology in the renewal of licences and payment via online and kiosks had reduced contact between RTD officers and users, thus reducing corruption and abuse of power.

"For the enforcement of road traffic rules, the RTD is using the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) and the Automated Enforcement System (AES) which use camera footage.

"Although zero complaint cases is impossible to achieve, improvement should be done, especially in matters related to delivery," he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the RTD and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the launch of No Gift Policy and the Corruption Free Pledge, Monday.

The MoU was signed by RTD Director-General Datuk Seri Nadzri Siron and MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Prevention) Datuk Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil.

The RTD had taken disciplinary action against 33 officers for various offences last year in which eight were sacked and seven were suspended.
