Young siblings saved from possible harm

Kota Kinabalu: Two young siblings were taken out of possible harm's way by a Samaritan who took them in after noticing them alone at a hut just 10 metres from the beach in Kinarut, on Monday.

The housekeeping staff of Borneo Paradise Beach Hotel noticed the children at the hut without any adult supervision for over 30 minutes.

"The children, a boy, who is about three and his sister, who is still in diapers, was about two years old.

There was no food, no water to drink," said the hotel's General Manager Mazlan Mustapha on Wednesday.

The staff, known only as Suzie, grew concerned for the children's safety after seeing them alone at the hut 30 minutes later, prompting her to take them back with her to the housekeeping department.

The area near the beach is also known to be a spot for stray dogs to roam, which further prompted Suzie's concern for the children's safety.

"Our staff then took them to the housekeeping department where they were given food and fresh diapers, the boy later revealed that their parents were out buying snacks, we waited from 10.30am until 3pm, but nobody turned up.

'The boy also claimed that their mother ran away and never returned home after going out to buy cakes.

"But we couldn't just leave the children at the hut alone, something untoward might happen to them if we didn't step in to help, they might go to the water or might even be attacked by stray dogs in the area," he said.

"We waited until 5pm, still nobody showed up, prompting us to alert the police who came that night to take the children to the hospital," he said.

He said a man claiming to be the children's father only showed up on Tuesday morning.

"The man said he could not come much earlier because he was faced with some difficulty while out fishing…he left when we told him that his children are now with the police," he said.

"We do not know where the children are now…but we heard that they have been placed under the Welfare Department's care," he added.

Public concern was also raised after the incident of the two siblings being found alone near the hotel grounds went viral over social media.

Police could not be reached for comments as at press time. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
