President Cup starts today

Kota Kinabalu: More than 60 local amateur boxers from the West Coast area in Sabah will be competing in this year's President Cup which will kick-off today (Friday) at the St Benedict compound in Ranau.

Sabah Boxing Association President Datuk Orlando Harumal said the 3-day boxing event is expected to see tough competition and exciting with the entry of the army delegation.

"Myself and the members of the Sabah Boxing Association appreciate and are pleased with the entry of the army boxers in this year's tournament. I am very happy that the army delegation is participating in all the categories," said Orlando.

He added the presence of the army boxers will greatly help boost the morale of the other participating boxers.

Orlando said the participating boxing associations include those from Tuaran, Kota Belud, Penampang, Tuaran, Papar, Kota Kinabalu, and Ranau.

"The matches will be held daily from 1pm to 5pm and are expected to experience huge crowds during the entire tournament," he added.

During the President Cup, Orlando said Sabah Boxing Association will identify boxers with quality skills to participate in the forthcoming Saga tournament (Sabah Games) scheduled to be held in December this year.

According to him, the last Saga tournament was held in Sandakan and this year's event is scheduled to be held in Tuaran.

"This will surely be a very exciting 3-day boxing event and it is for this very reason that I am inviting the public to witness the matches." said Orlando. - Nikko Fabian
