Kota Kinabalu: The two siblings found without adult supervision at a hut just 10 metres from the beach in Kinarut have been handed over to the Welfare Department. Papar Police Chief DSP Nor Azizulkifli Mansor on Saturday said they are still investigating the matter but that action can be taken under the Child Act 2001 if indeed the children were neglected.

The siblings, a boy, who is about three, and his sister, who was still in diapers and about two years old, were spotted alone at the hut by a housekeeping staff of Borneo Paradise Beach Hotel on Monday.

The hotel's General Manager, Mazlan Mustapha, on Monday said his staff took the children back with her to the housekeeping department due to concern for their safety after seeing them alone at the hut for about 30 minutes.

The area near the beach was also known to be a spot for stray dogs. The hotel staff waited from 10.30am until 5pm, but nobody turned up, prompting them to alert the police.

The children told the hotel staff that their parents were out buying snacks, but later claimed that their mother ran away and never returned home after going out to buy cakes.

A man claiming to be their father only showed up the next day with an excuse of not being able to fetch them earlier due to some difficulty faced while out fishing. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
