Sandakan: Good news for the people of Sandakan who can now heave a sigh of relief.State Health Director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi said she has been informed by the Ministry of Health that the Duchess of Kent Hospital (DOKH) will be getting a 32-slice CT scanner, a mammogram machine and a fluoroscopy machine.

A CT scanner is for medical imaging needs while a mammogram machine is used for early detection of breast cancer (if any). Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that uses X-rays to obtain real-time moving images of the interior of the body.

"We have consistently been pushing for these facilities. We have never stopped asking the Health Ministry to consider upgrading of the Hospital," she told Daily Express.

On Friday, Dr Rundi said the DOKH has reopened three of its five operation theatres with effect from May 11.

"So far, 60 emergency and 25 elective operations have been performed at the upgraded facilities," she said when met at the just-concluded 3rd Borneo Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease Congress.

According to the Director, all four operation theatres will be opened next week, and one minor operation theatre will also be ready by then.

Since last year, Member of Parliament for Batu Sapi, Datuk Linda Tsen, Member of Parliament for Sandakan, Stephen Wong, and Senator Datuk Chin Su Phin of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have repeatedly raised the issue on the hospital's needs in Parliamentary sittings and also in the media.

In March this year, Tsen had in her debate on the Royal Address, made an impassioned plea for the upgrading of medical facilities in the DOKH. Earlier, she had also met up with the Health Minister who assured her that he would look into the matter.

Meanwhile, Dr Rundi disclosed that Duchess of Kent Hospital will be celebrating its 65th year of existence this year.

"An interesting programme will be lined up to mark the occasion," she said.

The 400-bed hospital was founded in 1952. It is named after the British princess, the Duchess of Kent, Her Royal Highness Princess Marina, who officially opened the building that year. - Mary Chin
