NABAWAN: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said he would propose to the State Government to include Panawari Festival, the traditional sports of Murut community, in the State tourism calendar. However, he said, before the move, research needs to be conducted to get in-depth knowledge regarding the festival.

"It can be inserted (into the tourism calendar) but we need to do more research to ensure this festival will be truly memorable for the tourists to come and participate," he said after officiating Pesta Panawari 2017, here.

Panawari was a traditional sports festival organised by Murut community early January each year since colonial time in Sabah but stopped after Malaysia gained independence status.

Nabawan was the first district in the State to revive the festival three years ago and this time it was organised in May to coincide with Harvest Festival celebration and 5,000 visitors attended the event, which showcased as many as 30 different types of sports activities that had been a huge part of Murut community.

Kurup, who is Member of Parliament for Pensiangan, said the initiative taken by the Nabawan district office to organise the festival for the third year was a positive step to revive the traditional sports that had been forgotten by the young people.

"Efforts to revive this festival is the right move, not only it will be able to bring people together, it will also help in strengthening the existing unity among the various races in Nabawan," he said.
