Sandakan: A total of 22 out of 35 food stalls at the Bandar Sandakan market which were ordered to close by the District Health Office on May 10, have been allowed to reopen. District Health Officer Dr Johari Awang Besar said improvements included having mirrored food storage containers, typhoid injection for food handlers and cleaning up of the premises among others.

"We will continue to monitor the premises from time to time not only at the market but also in other markets and public food stalls which were previously ordered to close such as the night market," he said, adding that it was to ensure a clean environment for consumers.

He told this to reporters after conducting surveys at the food stalls on the first and second floor of the Sandakan market, on Monday.

He was accompanied by personnel from the Sandakan Municipal Council who also took part in monitoring the environment.

He hoped vendors and food handlers will continue to abide by the law and ensure their food is safe for consumption. – Mardinah Jikur
