Putra Jaya: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has employed about 1.6 per cent Persons with Disabilities (PWD) of 8,000 workforce until now, said its Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim. She said the employment of 128 PWD, mostly working at the Welfare Department as professionals, senior officials and clerical department, was in line with Malaysia's one per cent Policy on Employment target for PWD to be employed in the public sector as endorsed in 1988.

"My ministry is the only ministry so far to have achieved more than one per cent target.

But, we have to be realistic. Although we cannot accept the police or defence force to hire PWD in their workforce but these PWD can be employed for clerical jobs.

"We encourage more ministries, agencies and private sectors to employ PWD so that they can participate fully in society by offering them opportunities to pursue their dreams and provide for their families," she told reporters after launching Asean Workshop on Community-Based Rehabilitation (ASEAN CBR Workshop) here, Monday.

Rohani said as of this March, there were 419,805 PWD registered with the Department of Social Welfare and she believed that there were a lot of more who were yet to register.

"This is a voluntary registration and it is not mandatory. But, we put emphasis on data collection to ensure proper planning regarding its target groups including PWD. We will continue to intensify efforts to encourage more individuals and families to register themselves and their family members who are disabled," she added.

In her opening speech earlier, Rohani shared Malaysia's best practises and success stories with Asean countries on the CBR approach as a multi-sector approach working to improve the equalisation of opportunities and social inclusions of person with disabilities.

She said the first CBR centre was initiated in 1984 in Mukim Batu Rakit, Kuala Terengganu and currently there are 537 centres and programmes been carried out as on home-based, centre-based and centre home based on health, education, social and empowerment.

The four-day workshop is attended by more than 100 participants from Asean and AseanN+3 (China, Japan and South Korea) experts and academicians.-Bernama
