M'sia start campaign in style

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia kicked off their Sudirman Cup campaign in style by whipping Germany 5-0 in a Group C match at the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre in the Gold Coast, Australia, Tuesday.Mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing set the ball rolling with a 21-17, 21-13 straight sets victory over Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Hettrich before Datuk Lee Chong Wei added the second point by crushing Roth Fabian 21-12, 21-11 in 34 minutes.

Rio de Janeiro Olympics silver medal winning men's doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong sealed the victory after sweeping aside Jones Rafly Jansen/Josche Zurwonne 21-16, 21-19 in straight sets.

The fourth match saw Goh Jin Wei, the country's number one women's singles player overcome Fabiene Deprez 21-10, 21-13 in just 31 minutes to make it 4-0 while women's doubles pair Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei completed the rout by defeating Johanna Goliszewski/Isabel Herttrich 21-12, 21-11.

Germany had lost 1-4 to Japan in their opening Group C match on Sunday while Malaysia face Japan in another Group C match Wednesday to decide the winner of the group.

Meanwhile, 10-time Sudirman Cup winner China lead Group A after defeating Hong Kong 4-1 and face Thailand Wednesday. – Bernama
