Attractive prizes await winners of Kaamatan traditional sports

Kota Kinabalu: Attractive prizes await winners at the annual traditional sports held in conjunction with the State-level Kaamatan celebration at the Hongkod Koisaan KDCA, Penampang, next week.Sabah Sports Board Chairman Datuk Louis Rampas who is also the organising committee's patron said eleven events will be contested this year."The events are mipulos (arm wrestling), momolistik (catapulting), rampanau (walking on stilts), sipatu tompulalanggoi (giant sandal), tumutu (paddy pounding), migazat dukug (tug-of-war), monungkava kalabau (buffalo rustling), monopuk (blow-piping), mamagandai (rice carrying), mobpiri mangapui (fire lighting) and manandus (spearing).ADVERTISEMENT "The public is welcome to take part in the events which will be held on May 30 and 31."Prizes in the form of cash, sponsored goods and certificates will be offered to the winners and no registration fee is required to participate in the events," he said during a press conference, here, on Tuesday.He said traditional sports have become one of the attractions for visitors who attend the Kaamatan celebration at the grounds of Hongkod Koisaan every year."Through such programmes, we can also preserve, promote and popularise some of the sports which are not played anymore."ADVERTISEMENT The launching ceremony will be presided by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, on May 30, at 1pm while the highlight of the programme will be the finals of the mipulos and migazat dukug, around noon at the venue.Mipulos, momolistik, rampanau, sipatu tompulalanggoi, tumutu, migazat dukug and monungkava kalabau will be held on May 30.

On the next day, the finals for monopuk, mamagandai, mobpiri mangapuui, mipulos, manandus and migazat dukug will be conducted.Registration starts from 8am-9am on both days with events expected to start at 9.15am. - Ricardo Unto
