Penampang: Penampang MCA Chairman Datuk Francis Goh accused the opposition of hitting below the belt over his presence at a Harvest Festival celebration in Kampung Ganang, Kapayan, that included a "pondan fashion show."He said he was invited as a guest of honour but had no knowledge about the show. "I wasn't aware of the whole programme. When the pondan fashion show was held, I had already left," he said, adding it was not his business to interfere in the organising of the event. An image from the event that went viral in social media showed Francis seated with several individuals at the event. The top part showed men dressed in women's clothes parading on stage (pic).

PKR Penampang Chief Kenny Chua said in a statement that the MCA should not have treated the Harvest Festival as a joke by parading "pondans" instead of real beauties who symbolise the fabled Huminodun in sanctioned events. However, Goh stressed that MCA was not the organiser and that he had reason to believe the photo had been edited with the purpose of not only tarnishing his reputation but also fuel anger among the KDM community against his party and the Barisan Nasional. More so following the controversial "Islamik Kaamatan" issue where a group organised Kaamatans statewide with an Islamic theme. The organiser of the latter event defended the move, saying many of the natives who harvest padi were Muslims and favoured a celebration devoid of unislamic practices like alcohol and involvement of pagan rituals. Goh said he had been informed by the event's organising chairman that the same show was held during last year's Harvest Festival. "Why only make a fuss about it this year?" he asked. - Leonard Alaza
