Man pleads not guilty to having Syabu

Kota Kinabalu: A 55-year-old local was charged in the Sessions Court with having 35.97gm of syabu.Francis Robert pleaded not guilty before Judge Noorhafizah Mohd Salim after the charge was read to him on Thursday.He allegedly had the drug at 1.15pm on Jan 20 this year by the roadside in Kg Bendung, Papar.

The offence under Section 12(2)/34 of the Dangerous Drug Act and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act is punishable by a jail term of between five years and life imprisonment, and whipping of at least 10 strokes, on conviction.The court set June 8 for case management and ordered Francis remanded further pending the date.Deputy Public Prosecutor Dinesh Raja appeared for the prosecution while counsel Ram Singh defended Francis.In the same court, 11 men and five women were jailed four months each for entering the State illegally.

Noorhafizah handed the sentence to the foreigners after they admitted to entering the State without valid documents.They committed the offence under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963, which provides for a fine of up to RM10, 000 or a jail term of up to five years or whipping, on conviction.

The men also were handed a stroke of the cane each except for the young offenders.They were arrested in different places at Kudat, Papar, Manggatal and Beaufort during operations conducted this month.The court ordered them to serve the jail sentence from the date of their arrest.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
