Kota Kinabalu: Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) is appealing to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to not allow the registration of any political party that uses the word 'Harapan' as acronym for its name. Its President Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin said this is vital to avoid public confusion among voters who may associate other parties with the word 'Harapan' with Harapan Rakyat in Sabah.

He cited a new party, Parti Harapan Malaysia, that has submitted an application to RoS to be registered and applied to be allowed to use the word 'Harapan' as the party's acronym.

Lajim said allowing such application will cause problems and create confusion as his party had used the word 'Harapan' first.

"We worry that if the new political party which will enter the political fray in the coming 14th General Election (GE14) is allowed to use the word 'Harapan', the public may get confused and link the party with Harapan Rakyat in Sabah.

"Hence, we in Harapan Rakyat have agreed to submit a letter of appeal for RoS to consider our concern.

"However, we have no problem with any non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the country using the word 'Harapan' in their names or the short form of their organisations when applying for registration with RoS," he said, while citing there is already one NGO that calls itself as 'Sinar Harapan'.

Speaking to reporters at Harapan Rakyat's headquarters, here, Saturday, Lajim said although the upcoming Parti Harapan Malaysia is a peninsula-based party, using the word 'Harapan' as the party's acronym would create confusion among the public.

Even the Barisan Nasional (BN) via Umno and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), he said, had objected to peninsula-based Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PBBM) under the leadership of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that applied to register to use the word 'Bersatu' as its party acronym and RoS did not approve the application.

On negotiation of seat allocations to be contested by Harapan Rakyat, Lajim said the party has so far agreed to contest in seats with majority Bumiputera Islam and Bumiputera KadazanDusun Murut (KDM) while those seats with Chinese majority would be taken up by Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR). - Hayati Dzulkifli
