Kuala Lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has given national women's doubles pair Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei three months time to improve their performance so that their partnership can be retained.BAM Technical Director Morten Frost Hansen said the duo now has been given another opportunity to prove their worth during the upcoming 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, after being dropped from the squad for the World Championships in Glasgow.

"We will evaluate them in the coming three months – June, July and August. After that we will be looking at what we are going to do (to them)," he told reporters.

Frost explained that the decision to drop Vivian-Khe Wei from the World Championships was made before the 2017 Sudirman Cup tournament and not as punishment for their poor performance in Gold Coast, Australia last week.

The pair were humiliated 7-21, 14-21 by Olympic champions Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi in the quarterfinals when Malaysia lost 1-3 to Japan.

"Of course they would prefer to play in the World Championships, but they also know that SEA Games is of national interest and will be played in Kuala Lumpur. So they understand that everyone has to play their part," he added.

Vivian-Khe Wei who are currently ranked 13th in the world had secured the silver medal in the 2015 Singapore SEA Games.

Frost said BAM would open entries for the World Championships to states or clubs if the Badminton World Federation (BWF) offered more entries to Malaysia, in the event that other nations pull out from the tournament.

"If Malaysia is given more entries to the World Championships because other nations pull out, we will forward the invitation to state players and they have to pay their own expenses to go there," he said.

The Malaysian team for the world meet will now consist of Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Zulfadli Zulkiffli in the men's singles, Yap Rui Chen (women's singles), Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong and Low Juan Shen/Chooi Kah Ming (men's doubles) and Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing (mixed doubles).

Women's doubles pair Lim Yin Loo/Yap Cheng Wen have also been dropped.

Meanwhile, Frost mentioned that some changes would be made in the coaching structure after discussions at the upcoming Coaching and Training (C&T) Committee meeting next week. – Bernama
