PETALING JAYA: The father of a girl who was beaten mercilessly by his mother in-law in a video that went viral blames the person who recorded the incident of having done nothing to stop it."(The victim) is my fourth child. I was alerted by my wife at about 9pm on Monday.

She sent me a few videos (of the incident) on WhatsApp.

"It was shocking and my mother-in-law is responsible for what she did. However, when I asked her who was recording the video, she said it was a woman in her 50s from the neighbourhood," he said.

He questioned the motive of the person who recorded the video and her failure to intervene.

"Why didn't you help her? If that's the case, I would say both of you are involved in this case.

I lodged a police report. I am not interested in punishing my mother-in-law but let the law take its course," he said, adding that he is waiting for a medical report on his daughter's condition from Serdang Hospital.

Subang Jaya district police chief ACP Mohd Azlin Sadari said the woman has been remanded for seven days under Section 31(0(a) of the Child Act 2001, that provides for a maximum fine of RM20,000 or a jail term up to 10 years, or both.

The incident happened in Taman Puchong Perdana in Selangor. In the video, a girl can be seen eating before a woman is heard asking the child to leave the dining table after the child spilled some of her food on the floor.

As the girl stands up, the woman sets on her and starts whipping her repeatedly with what appeared to be a cane, kicking and punching her.

Meanwhile, the house where it happened has become a centre of attraction.

Cars passing by slowed down and their drivers and passengers looked up to see if anything was going on in the double-storey house.

Some took out their phones to snap pictures. Neighbour Sasikala Murgan, 43, said the woman, believed to be the girl's grandaunt, is known to be hot-tempered.

She said people in the neighbourhood were afraid of her as she was "very loud".

Sasikala, a businesswoman, related an incident several months ago when the woman riled her neighbours after someone plucked pandan leaves in front of her house.

"The woman was so angry someone stole her pandan leaves and started screaming at everyone living nearby," she said.

"She was cursing everyone with abusive words, and destroyed the entire plant so no one would steal anymore."

Sasikala suggested the authorities send the woman for counselling and not punish her.

"She needs to go for anger management classes. Otherwise she is a nice person," she said.

Several who saw the video on social media asked if this was considered fair punishment after the child apparently spilt food on the floor during dinner.
