Govt urged to clarify status of teachers' colleges

Kota Kinabalu: The State Government has been urged to clarify whether the Keningau Teachers' Training College is being closed down.Parti Warisan Sabah Vice President Junz Wong said if it is true, then it would be a bad move by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government for which it would pay dearly in the next general election."It is the responsibility of the State Government to ensure that education is given top priority and the welfare of teachers and students are well taken care of.

"Sabah needs to train more teachers to replace 14,000 teachers from the peninsula who are currently teaching in Sabah and for future educational development," he said in a statement, here, Saturday. Wong said he was made to understand that half of the budget for teachers' training colleges has been cut. "You can cut whatever budget but it should not be at the expense of education. Teachers' allowances used to be RM640 but earlier this year, it was reduced to RM430. How can the teachers survive?

"I also heard that the Tawau Teachers' Training College is going to be closed down as well, while Sandakan Teachers' Training College has already been closed down," he said.
