Flying start for Goh-Shevon

Kuala Lumpur: National mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai put up a smashing performance to book their place in the second round at the Indonesia Open Super Series Premier Badminton Tournament at the Jakarta Convention Centre, Tuesday.The unseeded pair pulled off a pleasant surprise by defeating eighth seeded Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand winning in 21-16, 15-21 and 21-13 in the opening round of the US$1,000,000 (RM4.263 million) meet, according to Badminton World Federation (BWF) website www.bwfbadminton.com.

Two other national mixed doubles pairs – Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing and Chan Peng Soon/Peck Yen Wei also cruised to the second round after edging their respective opponents.

Tan/Lai defeated Taiwanese pair Lee Yang/Hsu Ya Ching 21-14 and 22-20 while Chan/Peck dislodged Ronald Ronald/Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia 21-18 and 21-18 in another first round encounter.

National women's singles shuttler, Soniia Cheah also made it to the next round by edging Chiang Mei Hui of Taiwan 21-18 and 21-11 but 2015 world junior champion, Goh Jin Wei Lee was knocked out from the tournament after losing 22-24 and 19-21 to Chiang's teammate, Lee Chia Hsin.

National badminton ace, Datuk Lee Chong Wei who is gunning to secure his seventh Indonesia Open title will kick off his campaign against host player Tommy Sugiarto, Wednesday.

For the record, Chong Wei has won the Indonesian Open title six times - 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2016. – Bernama
