More firearms for Forestry officers

Sandakan: The Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) will supply 45 more firearms to its officers and personnel who work in areas of high-risk forest encroachment activities.Sabah Forest chief conservator, Datuk Sam Mannan said the areas identified were in Ulu Segama Malua, Ulu Kalumpang, Sugut Beluran, Keningau and Kudat.

He said the firearms would also be supplied to members of the SFD Protect special squad.

The department received approval of additional firearms to replenish its current inventory of 45 firearms consisting of Glock pistols, Scorpion Evo pistols as well as Benneli shotguns and MKA1919 shotguns, he said in a statement Tuesday.

Sam added with the approval of the additional 28 officers and personnel to have a Carry & Use firearms licence, altogether, there were 90 licensed employees in the department at present.

In the meantime, he said that all firearms licensed officers and personnel would undergo refresher course and training sessions from time to time to familiarise themselves with the proper procedures, maintenance and safe use of firearms.

All licensed personnel must use the firearms competently without compromising safety at all times, and maintaining all protocols and regulations as stipulated in the standard operating procedures (SOP), he said.

He added that the training was conducted recently at the Sabah Shooting Association (SSA) shooting range in Kota Kinabalu on May 21.
