Sandakan: Four foreign men aged between 15 and 47 were apprehended about 2.2 nautical miles northeast of Pulau Langkayan by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on suspicion of involvement in fish bombing activity.District Operation Deputy Director, Maritime Commander Mohd Khairulanuar Abdul Majid, said the arrests followed a tip-off received from the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area who reported the incident to the agency.

"Inspection on the pump boat by MMEA personnel found items used to make explosives and about 50kg of fish on board," he said.

He said the agency views such illegal activity seriously as it could severely damage the marine ecosystem and network, especially corals.

The four men did not have any documents and have been arrested under Section 26 of the Fisheries Act 1985 for fishing using illegal methods.

The boat, together with its engine and case exhibits were brought to the Sandakan Maritime Jetty for further investigation. - Mardinah Jikur
