Many marooned in Labuan flooding
Labuan: Two days of continuous rain caused flooding in several areas here and some families have been marooned in their houses.PKR Chairman Simsudin Sidek said among the worst hit was Lorong 8 Kampong Ganggarak where a number of houses were affected. He said this was a serious problem to the families as it affected their Ramadhan plans.

It was inconvenient for them to leave home to go to work, to cook and to buy food for breaking of fast.

He thanked Fire and Rescue Department personnel who were on standby at village to help out.

Simsudin said with Labuan being a Federal Territory and claims of hundreds of millions of ringgit spent on upgrading rural infrastructure, it should not be experiencing such flooding.

Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli, when contacted, said even before the opposition had expressed concern, the BN Government had been addressing the problem.

"Several areas in Labuan are known to be flood-prone and we have applied for a bigger allocation to enable the Drainage and Irrigation Department to upgrade infrastructure," said Rozman.

He added that the allocation provided for was not sufficient. The upgrading works are, therefor, carried out in stages, drains have been widened and deepened and some muddy roads replaced with gravel. Rozman also said the current flooding was freak and unfortunate and efforts were made to get a bigger allocation.

He also said flooding happens even in developed Kuala Lumpur and Penang. - Sohan Das
