PWD assistant engineer charged

Kota Kinabalu: An assistant engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD) who was commended for excellent service three times was on Tuesday charged in the Special Corruption Court with abusing his position in awarding his daughter's company a road maintenance project valued at RM49,200 seven years ago.Chong Min Hong @ Raymond Chong, 59, pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manat after the charge was read to him.

Chong who is attached to the Tuaran PWD, is accused of using his power as chairman of the price assessment committee to award JR Enterprise belonging to his daughter Patricia Chong @ Patrecia Raymond, an urgent maintenance of Jalan Hamad Kitapol at Km1.40-Km6.80 in Tuaran.

The crime allegedly took place at the Tuaran PWD's office on Oct 29, 2010.

The offence under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine not less than five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher, on conviction.

The court set July 26 for case management and released Chong on a bail of RM10,000 with RM6,000 deposited.

Chong was also ordered to report to the MACC's office once a month and his passport, if any, to be impounded by the court until the disposal of his case.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Rustam Sanip from the MACC appeared for the prosecution while counsel Dominic Chew and Luke Ressa Balang defended Chong. - Cynthia D Baga
