PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing pulled off the biggest upset in their careers at the Australian Open badminton championship on Wednesday. The pair dumped Olympic champions and reigning Indonesian Open champions Tontowi Ahmad-Lilyana Natsir of Indonesia 21-17, 21-16 in the first round in Sydney, reported The Star.

It was a sweet revenge for Kian Meng-Pei Jing after losing to their formidable opponents in the quarter-finals of the Indonesian Open last week.

They will take on Japan's Yugo Kobayashi-Misaki Matsutomo next.

They may be tired after fighting so hard to win the Indonesian Open title on Sunday but we took our chances well," said Pei Jing.

"We did not lose focus. We're so thrilled and happy with our big win," she said.

It was also a good day for Malaysia when Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See cleared their opening round with a 14-21, 21-19, 21-14 win over Japan's Takuro Hoki-Sayaka Hirota in another mixed doubles match.
