Kota Kinabalu: City residents have been urged to work together in making crime prevention measures a daily practice by channelling information to the police and relevant agencies. To further encourage this, the State Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department launched a Crime Prevention Friendly Cycling Patrol campaign and the use of the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application in conjunction with the fasting month.

"The purpose is to get closer to the community in conjunction with the fasting month. Both parties, whether police or even the public, are in need of one another," said Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai who officiated the ceremony at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters here, Tuesday.

"I urge everyone to work together to create a sense of security in our city," he said.

He said studies found that crime often happens due to negligence of the individuals themselves and suggested that the community here take responsibility by working together with the police to prevent crime.

"This is also in line with the concept 'polis dan masyarakat berpisah tiada' and I hope the people, especially city residents, support crime prevention programmes and activities organised by the police, auxiliary police or any parties so that the prosperity and security of the nation will remain," he said.

The Crime Prevention Friendly Cycling Patrol campaign involves joint bicycle patrols by those from the auxiliary police, City Hall and Amanita, among others.

The focus is to prevent crime in public places and residential areas identified as areas with frequent crime.

The VSP application on the other hand is a new innovation by the Royal Malaysian Police, which aims to facilitate the people to provide information or complaints that require assistance from the police.

It was officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in conjunction with the 210th Police Day celebration on March 25 and can be downloaded for free via Play Store using a smartphone.

A total of 643,124 people have so far registered as members of Rakan Cop and VSP across the nation and of the figure, a total of 28,608 are from Sabah.

For VSP alone, the Sabah police contingent managed to register 5,244 application users over a short period, making it the second highest after Selangor.

The ceremony was attended by State Community Safety and Crime Prevention Department Head SAC Ahmad Fadzillah Mohamed who represented State Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din, City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra and State Police Auxiliary Commandant Supt Paul Lajumin among others. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
