Kudat fisherman swims to safety after boat capsizes
Kota Kinabalu: A fisherman managed to swim to the safety of a trawler a day after his fishing boat capsized off the Kg Muhibbah waters, in Kudat, on Tuesday.A relieved Haranul Jamalu, a 46-year-old Bajau, was also thankful for the life jacket he was wearing which enabled him to stay afloat for a longer period of time.

It was learnt that strong waves and winds caused his boat powered by an 18-horsepower engine to capsize as he was returning home to Kg Muhibbah.

Sabah and Labuan MMEA Regional Director First Admiral Mohd Zubil Mat Som on Wednesday said a search and rescue operation was mounted following information received by the Kudat Maritime Operations Centre at about 11.30am on Tuesday.

The operation was coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) in Kota Kinabalu involving two speedboats from MMEA Kudat and three boats from the marine police.

At about 3.30pm, MRSC Kota Kinabalu received information that the man managed to swim to a trawler off Bak-Bak waters in Kudat.

A team rushed to the site where the man, described to be exhausted but safe, was and took him to the Kudat Hospital where he was reunited with his family.

On that note, Zubil said MMEA are always on the ready to assist those in need of help.

"Call us immediately via MERS 999 should you need any assistance while at sea," he said. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
