Kuala Lumpur: National ice skating ace Khairil Ridhwan Khalil is optimistic of contributing gold medals in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017) scheduled from Aug 19-30. Khairil, 17, winner of three gold medals from short track speed skating events in an Ice Skating Championships held in Singapore early this year, said the achievement in Singapore would serve as a benchmark for the gold quest at the Empire City Mall, venue for SEA Games ice skating events. He said apart from his achievement in Singapore, the National ice skating team's fourth place finish in the 5,000m relay behind China, South Korea and Japan during the Asian Winter Games (AWG 2017) in Sapporo, Japan in February, showed that Malaysia are the best placed team in South East Asia. style="display:block; text-align:center;"

"In the Singapore Ice Skating Championships I won three gold medals from the 500m, 1,000m and 1,500m short track speed plus a bronze in the 3,000m relay. Eight gold medals are at stake in the KL 2017 and the three gold medal target set is a realistic one," he told reporters at the signing of a sponsorship deal between the Ice Skating Association of Malaysia (Isam) and BMW Group Malaysia at the Youth and Sports Ministry.
Ice skating is making its debut in the SEA Games.
Eight gold medals will be up for grabs in the SEA Games men's and women's ice skating events – two in figure skating and six in short track speed skating.
The events held are men's and women's 500m, 1,000m, 3,000m relay plus the men's and women's 'figure skating' disciplines. – Bernama
