Man holds his children hostage
MANGGATAL: A 30-year-old jobless man who felt dejected when his former wife did not come home for Hari Raya from Johore, held his two children inside his room and threatened to kill them at Kg Suang Prai, here, Tuesday.City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra (pic) said quick action by the suspect's cousin and police negotiation skills helped avert a tragedy and the suspect, believed to be on drugs, willingly surrendered to police.

The suspect's cousin, who notified the police, had gone to his aunt's house in Kg Suang Prai at 5pm.

"Upon reaching there, the homeowner, who is the complainant's aunt, had asked him to help talk to the suspect because the suspect had shut himself and the daughters, aged 4 and 5, in his room and was in a depressed state.

"The complainant, who is the suspect's cousin, went up to the first floor room to try and talk to the suspect.

At the time, the suspect was running amuck, threatening to murder his children," he said.

When the complainant reached upstairs, he smelled smoke coming out of the room.

The complainant also saw the suspect burning something in the room before brandishing a "samurai" sword on his children's neck while shouting at the complainant not to interfere.

The complainant tried to persuade the suspect to be calm and not to hurt his children but his words fell on deaf ears.

Seeing that his attempt was futile, the complainant went downstairs before calling the police.

A team of police arrived at the house within 15 minutes and surrounded the premises before talking to the suspect to release the children and surrender.

"After several minutes of persuasion and negotiation, the suspect brought his children out of the room and handed them over to his waiting aunt.

"The suspect also surrendered to the police before showing them the weapons he used to threaten his children.

"Police found a kitchen knife and a 40cm 'samurai' sword on the bed and seized the items.

The suspect was later brought to the police station for further action," he said, adding that the man was remanded until July 1 for investigation.

Police also confiscated the suspect's air rifle, found in the house.

Chandra said the suspect does not have previous convictions although he tested positive for amphetamine.

"Both the children did not suffer any injury and it was determined that the suspect was under the influence of drugs (syabu) during the incident," he said. - Tracy Patrick
