Kota Kinabalu: Music buffs here will have the chance on July 6 to hear from a crowd of top notch professional musicians who will perform in a fund raising concert for the Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra to invest in its fledging outreach programmes, especially in procuring essential musical instruments.

Dubbed East Malaysia Bach Cantata Singers and Festival Orchestra, they are already here to present the Third Annual East Malaysia Bach Cantata Lecture Concert Tour between July 3-6, after performing in Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching and ending in Kota Kinabalu, JPO conductor Yap Ling told Daily Express.

Organised by the Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO), with the support of the JKKN, the concert shall be held on July 6 at 8.30pm at the Auditorium, Kompleks JKKN Sabah.

As an avid composer, Johann Sebastian Bach's works continue to be one of the most impactful for classical instrumentalists.

Being coined as the "Father of Western Music", he not only influenced music for generations to come, but he integrated melodies at the time, choral counterpoint as well as novel instrumental and vocal solo writings.

"Bach composed one new cantata each week for about five consecutive years, only about 200 came down to us, and each is a masterpiece in itself," Yap Ling noted.

"Some Cantatas last for only 15 minutes, but nonetheless Bach could express such rich messages orderly and effectively through the art of music," he added.

"The concert shall feature two of these musical masterpieces, BWV 72 and BWV 144, which were composed in 1724 and 1726," Yap disclosed.

"In keeping with our orchestra's Outreach and Educational initiatives, there will be a brief introduction and demonstration in English (with Chinese subtitles) to help the audience understand the music," he promised.

Conducted by the Artistic Director Professor David Chin, noted performers include soprano singer Chia Yee Yean, countertenor singer Chan Wei En, tenor singer Okawa Tan, baritone singer Bryan Sim and concertmaster Yap Ling.

Conductor and Professor David Chin is currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer and Artistic Director of the Malaysia Bach Festival, Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Bach Festival and the East Malaysia Bach Cantata Singers and Orchestra, as well as the Principal Conductor of the Association of Toronto Chinese Evangelical Church Musicians in Canada, according to Yap.

"He served as the Director of Choral Activities at Roberts Wesleyan College in New York from 2012-2017, as well as the Music Director of the Chinese Choral Society of Rochester from 2011-2014," Yap added.

"David has recently been awarded the prestigious Harvey Fellowship by the Mustard Seed Foundation.

He has also been awarded full scholarship by the Eastman School of Music to pursue both Master's and Doctoral degrees in conducting."

"The proceeds from this fundraising concert will be used to purchase musical instruments for our Outreach & Education Program," Yap stressed.

"JPO's Outreach and Education Program is intended to raise the community musical standard through the outreach of other community channels," he explained.

"The generous support from the concert will be used to give youths an employable skill.

Together with the orchestra's dedicated professional musicians who freely give their time and talents, these students will receive pivotal pastoral care for optimal developments and lead purposeful lives," he said.

To date, JPO's Outreach Teaching programmes in Kota Marudu, Papar, Tuaran, Tawau and Yangon, comprise more than 120 students. Tickets at RM50 each can be obtained from Sabah Art Gallery.
