Beaufort: Parti Harapan Rakyat (Harapan) will contest in "a large number of State and Parliamentary seats" in the coming general election. Its President Datuk Lajim Ukin said the party has already identified a few more constituencies to ensure straight fights between its candidates and those from the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates.

"So far, we have identified about 26 or 28 State seats and up to 12 parliamentary seats in the State.

All these depend on the discussion set to be held with other members of the United Sabah Alliance (USA) as they would also have already identified potential seats for their candidates," he said.

Lajim also commented that the door is always open for discussion with parties outside of the USA coalition such as Parti Warisan Sabah. The Klias Assemblyman said the only chance to topple the government is through close collaboration among opposition parties.

"We are still open to talk to them (Warisan) because our goal is not to dominate others but to unite and work together to achieve our objectives. But it depends on Warisan's President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal because our chance to topple the government is bigger when we unite," he said.

He is confident the coalition will be able to mount a serious challenge to Umno and BN and seize more seats from them in the election.

Meanwhile, DAP Sabah's initiative to announce its intention to contest 20 State constituency seats and eight parliamentary seats is just to state that it is ready and prepared for the election.

DAP Sabah Chairman Stephen Wong said other opposition parties should not be alarmed as DAP is only stating its wishes to contest in areas that the party had contested before and which it has "cultivated".

"We are already prepared and we hope the other opposition parties can come to a consensus on seat allocation as at the moment it is a bit loose," he said, after officiating the DAP Tawau mobilisation room at Fajar Complex, Monday.

He said opposition parties do not have resources like Barisan, thus they need a mutual agreement on seat allocation earlier in order to focus on their resources.

On the opening of the DAP Tawau mobilisation room, the first for DAP Sabah, Wong said it is good and will spur other branches to be serious and work harder for the election.

DAP Sabah secretary Chan Foong Hin who was also present, said DAP does not have any conflict with Pakatan Harapan members but is concerned over the slow process of seat negotiations with Parti Warisan Sabah.

He added the mobilisation room will be open from 8.30am to 5.30pm to help voters check their voting area and also for receiving complaints. - Iskandar Dzulkifli
