Yee qualifies for British Junior Open

Kota Kinabalu: It was another memorable achievement for Sabah squash as Yee Xin Ying qualified for next year's British Junior Open (BJO) following her win in the girls Under-15 category at the Penang Junior Open 2017 which concluded at the Nicol David International Squash Courts on Wednesday.The Sandakan lass, who is based in Bukit Jalil Sports School and seeded 3/4th in the tournament, took four sets to beat second seeded Kiroshanna Manoharan 11-5, 11-3, 1-11, 11-9 in the final to lift the title and also claimed the all expenses paid passage to the British Junior Open.Yee had earlier caused a big upset when she brushed aside top seed Wong Heng Wai in straight sets 11-6, 11-7, 11-8 in the semi-final.

This year's British Junior Open finalist Duncan Lee seeded second also won in the boys Under-15 category but his status for the British Junior Open has yet to be decided as he will be over aged next year and the national body may send him for the Under-17 category instead.In the final on Wednesday, he came from a set down to upset top seed Muhammad Amir Amirul Azhar 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 12-10.Another BJSS-based Sabah player Lai Wen Li also made it to the final but lost in the girls Under-19 category to top seed Japanese Satomi Watanabe 6-11, 3-11, 8-11.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

This year's BJO semi-finalist Jessica Keng competed in the higher Under-17 age group and took third spot with a 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 playoff win over Amita Gondi. She earlier gave a tough fight before losing to top seed Chan Yiwen 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 10-12 in the semi-final. - GL Oh
