Sandakan: The 27th package of 35 packages under implementation of the Pan Borneo Highway project in Sabah is being carried out smoothly. Deputy Chief Minister cum Infrastructure Development Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said the package involving 18.1km starts from Kampung Lot M up to a junction of Kota Kinabalu- Sandakan-Lahad Datu at Mile 32.

He said the Federal-funded RM513 million for the 27th package also includes building a 70-metre bridge crossing Sungai Segaliud, pedestrian bridge at SMK Segaliud and a multilevel junction.

"This 27th package is currently under construction here and we are expecting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be officiating it by end of this month to make it the fourth location visited by him on implementing the project in Sabah.

"Obviously, it will bring huge impact to the surroundings at Mile 32 as the impact will develop the area and may become a catalyst and prime mover towards better economic growth," he said.

Pairin said this after conducting a working visit to the site of 27th package area here on Thursday.

The package is also part of the project involving a total of 706 kilometres worth RM12.86 billion.

Based on a briefing, Pairin said the 27th package is running smoothly.

"I hope the award of the 35 packages could be finalised next year to concerned contractors so that implementation of the project could be expedited and the project could be completed in five years' time by 2021," he said.

On villagers affected by the project, Pairin said all dealings would be carried out based on the law where the people's acceptance is very encouraging in ensuring the project is completed and benefit the road users. - Mardinah Jikur
