PETALING JAYA: Quality strikers and young talents will play an important role in strengthening the national squad ahead of the 2019 Asia Cup qualifying clash against Hong Kong on Sept 5, said 'Harimau Malaya' head coach, Nelo Vingada. The Portuguese-born coach said attackers with great quality would be a good addition while young talents will give a balance to the squad in Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) quest to qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

"A quality striker is the most important. If I can find a striker with good fighting spirit, mobility and strong in counter attack, and another one maybe tall and a good header I think that should be okay.

That is the kind of players I'm looking for.

"There will be a few players from the Under 22 (U-22) who might join us but we will decide only after the 29th SEA Games is over," he told reporters here, Tuesday.

However, he admitted that to discover local strikers who meet the criteria was a tough task, as most strikers in the Malaysian League (M-League) are foreigners.

"We are trying and investigating but to be honest the position of striker is not easy to find because mostly are foreigners who play for the teams in M-League," he added.

Meanwhile, FAM deputy president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said a series of international friendlies would be held in August after the squad's centralised training which would be held in Melaka.

He said Syria, ranked 82nd in the world, were among teams that would be involved apart from Macau and Myanmar.

"The Harimau Malaya will undergo centralised training in Melaka from Aug 14-21 before playing Syria at the Hang Jebat Stadium on Aug 22.

After that the squad might leave for Macau for a friendly," he said. – Bernama
