Kota Kinabalu: Going digital is the way forward in doing business especially in this information age, Deputy Chief Minister cum Industrial Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan said."The model of doing business is about going digital, a lot of activities, a lot of things that we do today is basically very much depending on data, depending on how you manage data to get the right information.

"We have entered a digital age, a modern way of doing business where you don't need big office space to start a business now, all you need are computers and good Internet speed.

"Now going forward we will see that a lot of businesses will be online, even very small operators they will be selling things online , it is the 'in' thing today," he said when attending a Regus Suria Sabah Hari Raya Open House here, on Tuesday.

"This is what we need to encourage, but we need to build this up in a proper way with good business discipline, but it is only the approach and way of doing business that is different.

"As far as the government is concerned, we encourage, promote and support this," he said.

He said he used to say that changing from the conventional way of doing business was not easy and that was the problem with most.

"But I can say this, I cannot fight change, if this is how business is going to change, I will support, I will accommodate," he said.

On another note, he said on the scale of one to 10, Sabah have definitely passed five and is now going on six to seven at any time.

"The growth rate is not something that is gradual, it can be extremely fast when you do business online, the speed of things happening is going too fast, almost everything is done online now, from booking a flight ticket to calling for taxi service.

"And this is what I am excited about, a lot of people are talking about how people can now get into business at a fast rate, unlike before , people use to say you can't do business until you have something established

"Today, any right connection is business, we use to say, business is only selling products, it is not true, a bigger sector of business is services, in services you provide and you can charge your rate...this too is business," he said.

The event was also attended by representatives from Uber Kota Kinabalu and Maxis among others. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
