Biggest gathering of MU supporters in KK
Published on: Sunday, July 16, 2017

Kota Kinabalu: The only football club in Malaysia able to gather a record number of supporters under one event achieved it when supporters of Manchester United assembled for the second annual dinner at Hakka Hall, here, on Friday.

President of MUSC (Manchester United Supporters Club), Batholomew Jingulam, said he was overwhelmed with the increasing number despite the club having been officially formed last year. It showed that MU is the favourite club in the country, he said.

"It started with a small discussion among seven people in 2011 (to form a club), and today over 1,000 people have joined as members. It reflects how far SRD (Sabah Red Devils) and now United Malaysia have grown.

"This may be the biggest gathering of supporters anywhere in Malaysia," said Batholomew to applause.

Apart from members from Kota Kinabalu, the event also saw attendants from Kuala Lumpur, Sandakan, Tawau, Ranau, Keningau and Sarawak.

He pointed that Sabah is now known better and it is in the world map by being one of the strong supporters among other clubs (from other countries) through the active participation of MUSC.

"If you log in to the Manchester United's official website, we the Sabah Red Devils have made Sabah known to the world. Every Sabahan should be proud of it as we are acknowledged by Manchester United."

He explained that MUSC is not just a fan club but also a platform where members have the opportunity to realise their dream to watch MU playing live in Manchester City.

He said MUSC (Malaysia) was the 28th biggest club in the world to be at the match last year during last season, when 179 members and five season ticket holders attended. He expected the number to increase for the coming season.

"Some 200 supporters have made their dreams come true when they finally went to Manchester City to watch their favourite players playing live where 50 of them were first timers. So, we in MUSC want to continue the excitement by giving this opportunity to our loyal members to fly to Old Trafford where all expenses are taken care of," he said.

Organising Chairman Kenneth Jayaraman confided that the club is making history despite encountering many challenges in structuring it into reality and proper management.

"The theme, 'United Unite! The Story Continues', briefly narrates the journey our club is on.

It was only slightly over two years ago that Sabah Red Devils was registered as a legal entity, and see where we are now," said Kenneth proudly.

He added that despite a brief history, the club hoped to make it a long and prosperous one with everyone bringing home a piece of history as they were part of the history-in-the-making by participating the biggest football fan gathering.

He thanked his organising team for the dedication and effort in putting everything in order and letting supporters feel the exciting moment of what the club has to offer to the members.

Also present were Datuk Jahid Jahim, Datuk Ajit Galun and Penampang MP Darrel Leiking and senior members from Kuala Lumpur, among others. - Lorena Binisol
