Kota Kinabalu: Malaysians and Chinese nationals believed to be members of a loan shark syndicate operating in Paranaque City, Philippines were arrested by members of the Philippine National Police-Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) on Tuesday. The 45 foreigners were arrested for allegedly kidnapping a 48-year-old Singaporean woman who frequented a casino in Paranaque City, according to PNP-AKG Director Senior Supt Glenn Dumlao.

The hostage rescue drama came after condominium guards noticed the feet of the victim dangling on the terrace of a condo unit in Pasay City Tuesday morning.

"Her intention was to escape. She was trying to open the door in the veranda. When she managed to open the door, her feet came out and was noticed by a security guard," said Ricky Agana, a resident of the condominium who managed to help the victim.

The building's security and the police who were alerted rescued the victim, who was reported missing the day before.

It was learned that the victim was able to identify three of the suspects during a police line-up Tuesday afternoon in Camp Crame.

The PNP-AKG said the suspects asked for a P9-million (about RM800,000) ransom from the victim's family and the victim is a tourist who frequented a casino.

"They (suspects) are pretending to be casino players to spot their victim. Upon identifying their victim who is heavily losing money, they will befriend the victim and offer cash loans," Dumlao said.

Once the victim is heavily in debt, the syndicate would begin to make threats and abduct him or her for ransom, police said.

This incident was the seventh case of a loan shark syndicate kidnapping since last month.

The Bureau of Immigration is also looking into the travel documents of the 45 suspects. - Nikko Fabian
