Penampang: The State Government has been urged to increase its grant to the Sabah Anti-Tuberculosis Association (Sabata), which is working closely with the Health Department to eradicate tuberculosis in the State.Kapayan Assemblyman Dr Edwin Bosi said he was concerned and worried about the increase in Tuberculosis (TB) cases in Penampang.

"I feel sad because although we are now in the 21st century, we are still threatened by this ancient disease," said Bosi, a member of Sabata (Penampang branch), who joined the July flag sales.

"I hope the Government will heed my plea. As Sabah is a tourist destination, diseases such as tuberculosis must be wiped out. TB gives a negative image to a country as it reveals poor health and sanitation standards.

Bosi said he knew that the Sabah Health Department is very concerned about TB and is working closely with Sabata to eradicate it.

He was also touched by the generosity of the people of Penampang and hoped Sabata will achieve its target by the end of this month.

"Sabata is an NGO and receives a small grant from the Government annually. I have personally spoken out in the State Assembly, appealing to the Government to give more funding to Sabata.

"It is a silent killer and spreads very fast in our society where there are many festivals.

The only way to fight it is to go out and screen our people and get the positive cases to undergo six-month comprehensive treatment," he said.

Meanwhile, Sabata Penampang branch chairman Sylvester Spiji thanked the Penampang people for supporting Sabata through their generous donations during the July flag sales.
