New facilities for national diving squad soon: Khairy

SEPANG: The country's diving squad will soon have their own training pool which is also their much-awaited facility said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.Khairy said the country's divers would not have to travel back and forth to China for training as work on the construction of the swimming pool is expected to commence soon after the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017).

The training pool will be constructed near the 'dry gym' at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City in Bukit Jalil and will be equipped with sports facilities such as harness.

"Currently, the national divers do not have their own training pool, their training is held in the competitions pool.

So once the pool is completed, they do not have to waste time to go to China anymore.

Khairy called on the state governments to invest in sports facilities, especially in sports that have shown outstanding achievements at the global level, not just diving.

He said most national back-up squad athletes were identified at the state level before their talent is developed at the national and international levels.

Commenting on the success of diver Cheong Jun Hoong who won the world title in the women's individual 10m Platform at the Fina World Aquatic Championships in Budapest, Khairy said the success would be the basis of the next success.

The first Malaysian diving sport world champion title at the Duna Arena in Budapest, Hungary was a succession to the Rio Olympic Games' silver medal won by Jun Hoong and Pandelela Rinong through the 10m Synchronised Platform.

"It was a fantastic win in Rio Olympics last year, but this time it is beyond expectation.
