Gambling tools cost man RM3,000 fine

Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old man was slapped with a RM3,000 fine or a month's jail for illegally having Wah Hui gambling paraphernalia.Hii Chung Ing pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to having six pieces of Wah Hui puzzles, a pen and RM41 in cash at 3.40pm on Jan 28, last year near the public toilet at the Segama area, here.

Inspector Rasydan Jasni, prosecuting, told the court that Hii was detained by police for behaving suspiciously and when checked, all the items were found on him.

Hii had committed an offence under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail, on conviction.

In another case, a 59-year-old man was sent to prison for 60 months after he admitted to taking drugs for the third time.

Loh Chee Kwong was arrested for committing the offence on July 4, this year.

The offence under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a jail term of between five years and seven years, and whipping of not more than three strokes. Loh was exempted of the whipping due to him being over 50 years old.

Meanwhile, another two men were penalised for having drugs.

Sim Keng Seng was fined RM4,000 or four months' jail for having 0.52gm of cannabis at 4pm on May 16 in a house at Bundusan, Penampang. Alexander Jude Herbert was jailed eight months for having 0.51gm on June 16 at Kg Babah, in Penampang.

Another man, Mohd Fawzan Nizam, was ordered to pay a fine of RM1,500 or four months' jail for taking drugs on Nov 17, last year. – Jo Ann Mool
