Ex-Sabah footballers committed to developing the game

Sandakan: Former State football players are committed to help develop the sport as shown in their willingness to support the Sandakan Zone Under-21 Football Championship, in Sandakan Sports Complex, here, recently.Sabah Former Football Players Association (PBBPS) President Datuk James Wong said, he hoped the championship can become an avenue to discover and polish new talents as well as one of the ways to bring back the golden era of football in the State.

"We were able to obtain big achievements during our time where the facilities were limited, compared to the facilities provided for the players now but the achievement is not so good.

"Hence, we would like to share our experiences to revive the excellence," he said during the closing ceremony of the championship.

It was officiated by Sugud assemblyman Datuk James Ratib.

The one-day championship was participated by three teams – Beluran, Sandakan and Kinabatangan, to vie for the Takad Nabalu President's Cup.

Among the former players who came to show their support were Datuk Hassan Sani, Matlan Marjan, Malim Surat Razali Zinin, Yahya Datuk Kasim, Azah Azerin, Matasan, Joseph Oppei and Stanley Chew.

Meanwhile, organising chairman Azman Mastar said the championship aimed to help the progress of Sabah football not only on gathering talented young players, but also expose coaches to actual competition.

"We are using a holistic approach. Apart from playing football, youths can also build good self-discipline through the championship which is in line with the aspiration of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman who is also Safa President who wanted to see the sport flourish in the State," he said.

According to him, their initiative complement Safa's effort where PBBPS plans to propose talented players to Safa to be assessed and trained.

"During the championship, our panel of assessors were Stanley Chew, Datuk James Wong, Datuk Hassan Sani, Matlan Marjan, Razali Zinin, Yahya Datuk Kasim, Malim Surat and Azah Azerin who will select potential players to be proposed to Safa."

Azman who is also Sabah President's Cup team manager said the championship will be held in other districts after Sandakan.
