Labuan: The Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (LCCC) has declared support for newcomer Tan Sri Andrew Liew Sui Fatt in the election for the presidency of the Sabah United Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SUCCC).Liew, who is the Chairman of the Kinabatangan Chinese Chamber, is expected to face Michael Lui, Chairman of the Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber, in the election scheduled to be held in Kota Kinabalu on July 31.

Delegates from 23 affiliate chambers will elect the new office-bearers of SUCCC.

Citing reasons for "switching" support to Liew (in the last SUCCC election, Labuan favoured Michael), LCCC Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said:

"Our observations are that Liew has a good standing among the affiliates and he could keep the SUCCC united, strong and progressive.

"The other reason is that Liew is said to have good relationships with State Ministers and heads of departments, which is an important asset in helping affiliates resolve their woes arising out of policies."

According to some chamber members, Liew's another unseen edge is he is from the East Coast and likely to have the support of outgoing SUCCC President from Semporna, Datuk Seri Panglima Chan Sau Wah.

Gan has served as the President for two terms, from 1975 to 1978 and from 2012 to 2017, placing him in position to influence some votes in favour of Liew.

Michael, on the other hand, has not been sitting on the armchair. He recently launched his manifesto, themed "New Hope, New Trend, Innovations and Transformation." Michael has also pledged that he would ensure SUCCC remains relevant and continues co-operation with the Government for a good business environment.

"Michael is a long serving leader of Kota Kinabalu Chamber and of calibre, we respect him but we could only elect one President," said Wong.

Traditionally, the SUCCC President came from the State's East Coast. The last from Kota Kinabalu was the late Datuk Seri Nuar Tan. He lost the post to Gan in the 2012 election after a close fight.

Another well-known SUCCC President was the late Tan Sri Wong Chik Lim of Labuan who hailed from Sandakan.

It is not clear whether this would be a factor to disturb the chances of Michael in the election.

Meanwhile, Andrew was here on Saturday to witness the swearing-in of the new LCCC office-bearers.
