ShopBack anticipates one million users by year-end

Kuala Lumpur: E-commerce cashback platform, ShopBack, has projected the number of online users in the country to reach one million by year-end, surpassing those in Singapore and tailing Indonesia closely.The number of users in Malaysia soared by 260 per cent to 750,000 in July 2017, compared to 280,000 in the same month of last year.Meanwhile, Indonesia registered more than one million users, whilst Singapore had 450,000.

Given the rising demand for online services, including government initiatives such as legalising ride-hailing in Malaysia, Shopback Country General Manager, Alvin Gill said in a statement yesterday that the company is confident the target would be achieved soon. "Malaysians are always looking for a better way to shop and save as demonstrated by the boom in on-demand delivery services like HappyFresh and honestbee which recorded a more than 100 per cent sales growth in the first half of 2017."Online shopping and delivery services have been well received over the past year as it is convenient for users," he added.Gill said Malaysians tend to spend more during the festive season and annual grand sale period as demonstrated by the 30 per cent increase in ShopBack transactions then.

He also said the growth in year-on-year comparison can be attributed to aggressive promotions by online merchants, coupled with users becoming more price conscious on the back of fluctuating petrol prices. As of July 2017, ShopBack had successfully penetrated Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
