Kota Kinabalu: Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) led by its newly elected president Tan Sri Andrew Liew has pledged its full support to the State Barisan Nasional (BN) government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman. Liew, who was elected to the post on Monday, said the SUCCC was confident that under the present leadership, Sabah would continue to experience more development and its economy would continue to flourish. "Musa has been good for the State. He is a hard worker who goes down to the ground to see and hear for himself the issues confronting the diverse communities throughout Sabah," he said in a statement yesterday. ADVERTISEMENT He said Musa was also abreast of the issues affecting the Chinese communities in the state, namely on matters concerning business, education and security. "Musa understands the importance of creating a stable environment for businesses to flourish because of his business background," he said. Liew said the BN government under Musa's leadership has been very attentive to the needs of the Chinese community, giving millions yearly to Chinese vernacular schools, temples and community-based programmes organised by non-governmental organisations (NGOs). "Sabah is headed in the right direction. Many are attracted to come to Sabah not just to visit but live and work here," he said. ADVERTISEMENT He said it was vital for Sabah to be under the right leadership to ensure political stability that would continue to attract businesses and investors. Meanwhile, Iffah Dilaney writes that the Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (LCCC) Chairman, Datuk Wong Kii Yii, called for the unification of all 22 Chinese Chambers of Commerce in Sabah and Labuan.

He said the Constituent Chambers are currently very competitive with one another and the chamber will soon steer from it's original objective which is to promote liaison and co-operation among various Chinese Chambers of Commerce and/or other commercial and industrial associations. He believes Liew will be the key to their unification, thus the reason LCCC is offering Liew their full support. "I believe Liew is capable of bringing our chamber to a greater level" said Wong and hoped all Constituent Chambers would work with Liew now that he is head and not divided like before. Asked what improvements Liew can bring to Labuan specifically, Wong said the LCCC did not offer him support just to benefit Labuan but to improve the SUCCC in general. "We will see what he can achieve in the next three years" said Wong, expressing his hopes for Liew in the future whereby Liew would most likely be able to present to the SUCCC the fruit of their efforts from these past few years. The LCCC will do their best to voice out the concerns of the Labuan's Chinese community to Liew, in the hope that he will be able to bring about a solution for these issues. For instance, Wong said he will try to discuss with Liew regarding Labuan Mandarin Lions Club's House of Love project that has been delayed for a long time now due to the shortage of almost RM600,000 in their budget.Wong says the development of Labuan depends on local leaders and not solely on Liew himself. "Leaders must have a good relationship with Liew to be able to bring their issues to him and the chamber in order to find a solution together."
