Kota Kinabalu: Umno Penampang has unanimously agreed to support a motion that its Chief Datuk John Ambrose be given the opportunity to be appointed a Senator. Its Wanita Chief Noraini Idris said the three wings of the division – Wanita, Youth and Puteri – agreed for the motion to be considered by the Federal Government.

"We all know that the Penampang parliamentary seat and Kapayan and Moyog state seats were previously contested by Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties like MCA and Upko.

"We respect the understanding for the distribution of seats in the previous general election but if the top leadership feels there is a need for a change in terms of selection of candidates for the coming general election, then we welcome such move.

"But at the same time, at least, do give the opportunity for our divisional chief the chance to be appointed as a Senator," she said, at the opening of the simultaneous delegates meeting of Umno Penampang and its three wings by Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, here, Saturday.

Also present were Umno Penampang Divisional Chief Datuk John Ambrose, his deputy Datuk Hasnol Ayub, other party leaders, Penampang District Officer Luvita Koisun and other senior officials.

Noraini said Ambrose is qualified for the Senator post as he is of calibre and a people-oriented leader who often "turun padang" to meet and assist the grassroots.

In addition, she said Amrbose has close ties with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and other top leaders, which is an important aspect for a leader.

A joint motion from the Wanita and Puteri wings called for the empowerment of the 30 per cent policy of women as decision makers in the public or private sector.

Noraini said Wanita and Puteri members have huge potential to head government departments and agencies in both sectors.

On the selection of election candidates, she said they have made a stand that any potential candidate must be able to play a significant role in ensuring BN wins in the GE14 and, most importantly, forge close cooperation with the BN component parties in Penampang. - Hayati Dzulkifli
