Kuala Lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) wants the national shuttlers to emerge victorious at the BWF Badminton World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, from August 21-27.BAM president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said the nation's hopes of winning a maiden world title does not solely rest on the shoulders of national badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei, but also with the other players.

He said the shuttlers who could make a breakthrough in Glasgow were men's doubles, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and mixed doubles, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing.

"Of course we also want a world title for badminton this year. We will work hard for that," he said during a press conference after chairing the BAM Coaching and Training Committee meeting at the Malaysian Badminton Academy here, Wednesday.

Having seen a Malaysian world champion in track cycling and diving respectively, Mohamad Norza concedes that badminton too should deliver a world title for the country.

On the shuttlers' preparations for the world championships, he said it was proceeding well based on the feedback provided by the coaches including the men's singles coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.

Meanwhile, Chong Wei is likely to take on reigning world and Olympic champion Chen Long of China in the quarter-finals. This follows the draw ceremony at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) office here at Naza Tower on Wednesday, reported the New Straits Times.

The Malaysian second seed opens his campaign in the opening round against France's Brice Leverdez.

Other top players who are slated to take on the Malaysian shuttler are China's Tian Houwei (third round) and Denmark's Viktor Axelsen (semi-finals). A showdown with nemesis and five-time world champion Lin Dan of China is only possible if both players reach the final.
