Archers take aim at first gold of Games

Kuala Lumpur: The focus will be on the individual compound archery events that opens the archery competition by offering two gold medals Wednesday at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017).In action at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City, Lee Kin Lip and Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh will compete in the men and women individual events, respectively.

Fatin Nurfatehah won three golds at the 28th SEA Games in Singapore which saw Malaysia's archery squad winning five golds overall – four in the compound event.

The compound archery squad is represented by eight athletes, M. Khambeswaran, Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki, Zulfadhli Ruslan, Nor Rizah Ishak, Nurul Syazhera Mohd Asmi and Saritha Cham Nong besides Kin Lip and Fatin Nurfatehah.

The national archers are expected to face stiff competition from the Indonesian and Myanmar teams.

At KL2017, archery offers 10 gold medals – five recurve events for men, women, men's team, women's team and mixed team, while the other five golds are in compound events for men, women, men's team, women's team and mixed team.

The recurve squad comprises Haziq Kamaruddin, Khairul Annuar Mohamad, Muhamad Zarif Syahir Zolkepeli, Muhammad Akmal Nor Hasrin, Loke Shin Hui, Nur Afisa Abdul Halil, Nur Aliya Ghapar and Nuramalia Haneesha Mazlan.

The recurve squad which won one gold in Singapore two years ago, is expected to receive a strong challenge from Indonesia and Thailand.

The archery event at KL2017 is scheduled to take place from August 16 to 22.

At the Singapore SEA Games, the national contingent dominated archery with five gold, three silver and two bronze medals, the best archery result at the biennial games.

At KL2017, archery aims to win four golds – three of the compound events and the other through recurve events.

Team manager Shamsuddin Ibrahim said the target was very realistic based on the archers' current form but does not rule out winning additional medals in their own backyard. – Bernama
