Ops against smokers at airport to be intensified

Tawau: The Ops Anti-Smoking especially in Tawau Airport, will be continued to be intensified as some stubborn smokers ignore the smoking ban sign.Health Officer here, Dr G Navindaran said they still receive public complaints pertaining to hardcore smokers who still light up in the no-smoking zone.

He reminded the public not to smoke in the airport and prohibited areas like government premises, bus terminals, petrol stations, sport and recreation centres and other locations that have been gazetted to avoid action.

Offenders will be summoned under 32B for smoking in prohibited areas with a compound of RM250.

"The offender will face an action under Rule 11 (1)(g) of the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 that carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 or jail up to two years or both, upon conviction.

"The offender can pay the compound at the nearby health officer within 30 days from the issuance of the notice," he said here on Tuesday.

Navindran was commenting on the "Ops Anti-Merokok" at the airport that was held last Saturday by 16 health enforcement personnel led by assistant health officer here Abdulahdin Alifudin.

Twenty three notices of 32B were issued to hardcore smokers at the airport .

The operation was simultaneously conducted with "Ops Premis Bersih" where eight premises were inspected with two items were seized and one Notice 32B for smoking in restaurant issued.
