Tawau: The Indonesian Consulate in Tawau has yet to receive evidence of its citizens enjoying both Indonesian and Malaysian citizenship along the border with North Kalimantan. Its Consul Krishna Djelani said Indonesian government policy forbids dual citizenship unless the individual was born after 2006 because they are given the choice of whether to choose being Indonesian or Malaysian when they turn 18.

He asked about the matter during a media conference in conjunction with Indonesia's 72nd Independence celebration at Wisma KRI Tawau, here, Thursday. It is believed that many Indonesians from Kalimantan and Sulawesi, apart from southern Filipinos, had benefitted from the Project IC during the Mahathir administration and have Mykads.

He reminded Indonesians in the east coast of Sabah to always comply with the laws of the Malaysian Government, in accordance with their presence as guests in the country.

"Let's not cause problems or go against the laws … we must uphold the good name of Indonesia and maintain our unity," he said.

He expressed appreciation to the Malaysian Government for issuing foreign worker registration policy under the Sabah Rehabilitation Programme 2017 and hoped those employing undocumented Indonesian workers would help them to get passports.

The ceremony which began at 8.15am was attended by some 1,500 Indonesians in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu as well as those who received special invitations from Tarakan in North Kalimantan.

The event was celebrated with a flag raising ceremony in commemoration of the historic day of the Republic which must be celebrated by each Indonesian, even those living abroad.

The theme for the celebration this year, he said, is "Indonesia Work Together" because history has proven that the spirit of mutual cooperation regardless of tribe and religion has strengthened Indonesia as a nation.

He said the people's unity in fighting for independence during the colonial days was fruitful and now it is the responsibility of every Indonesian to maintain it. - Lagatah Toyos
