Tawau: An owner of a watermelon sauce business and food truck operators were among 95 entrepreneurs of Small and Medium Industries (SMIs) selected to receive aid from the Farmers' Organisation Authority (FOA).They received the aid, in the form of equipment, from Tawau Member of Parliament Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching, who is also Higher Education Deputy Minister.

"The aid is given to help them increase their productivity and income, a proof that entrepreneurs in the rural areas are not neglected by the Government," she said when met after handing over the agriculture equipment and processing machine to the recipients, who were among the 2,000 SMI entrepreneurs in the Tawau district.

The watermelon sauce business owner, Rahmah Manti, 42, who received equipment, including gas stove, said she would now be able to increase production with the additional stove.

"The demand for spicy and sweet flavoured watermelon sauce is good although the products have been in the market for only about six months," she said.

Prior to this, Rahmah earned her living selling watermelons from her farm and began making watermelon sauce as an innovation to prevent wastage of the fruit.

"I went to the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) to seek help on how to market the product and make it long lasting," she said.

Meanwhile, food truck operator Roslan Omar, 30, who has been in the business for about a year, thanked the Government for the initiative to help rural entrepreneurs.

He suggested the Government issue more licence for food truck operators, especially in the rural areas, as the response from the public was good.
