Top cop among 12 held by MACC
Kota Kinabalu: Four policemen, including the Head of the Commercial Crime Investigation Division in Lahad Datu, were arrested for allegedly receiving money totalling RM20,000 from a loan shark in Lahad Datu. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a seven-day remand order against the four to facilitate investigations under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

Sabah MACC Director Datuk Sazali Sabli (pic) on Wednesday said the 34-year-old Head of the Commercial Crime Investigation Division in Lahad Datu, an inspector, was detained on Monday following a report lodged by the loan shark to the commission.

He said the inspector was suspected to have received RM18,000 on Aug 16 and RM2,000 on Aug 21 from the loan shark as an inducement not to take action against him as well as for monthly "protection" payment.

Following the arrest of the inspector, Sazali said three policemen – a 29-year-old sergeant from the Commercial Crime Investigation Division and a 34-year-old lance corporal as well as a 29-year-old corporal from the Unit Tindakan Cepat – were picked up on Wednesday over their alleged involvement in the case.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din, when contacted, confirmed the arrest of the four policemen.

"We are leaving it to the MACC to conduct investigations and will cooperate with the commission whenever needed," he said.

The latest incident took place within a week after two policemen attached with the Narcotics Unit in Penampang were arrested by the MACC on suspicion of having accepted bribes on Aug 16.

Meanwhile, the MACC also detained eight assistant medical officers, Wednesday, for allegedly making false claims amounting to RM126,757.24 between January and May last year.

The eight, aged between 26 and 38, including a woman, were picked up between 10.19am and 10.35am at the Ophthalmology Department of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital during "Ops Optik".

It was learnt that they made the alleged false claims in their Overtime Allowance Statement.

They will be charged at the Special Corruption Court here today (Thursday) on 38 charges under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

Two will also face 20 charges under Section 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act 2009. - Sherell Ann Jeffrey
