RM3.2 mil for Sabah set-ups
Kota Kinabalu: The Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (Teraju), which is a strategic unit under the Prime Minister's Department, has provided RM13.267 million to seven local companies and 11 Sabahan entrepreneurs via two funds – Facilitation Fund and Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development here, Tuesday.Of the figure, seven Sabah companies received RM12.845 million from the Facilitation Fund while 11 Sabahan individuals who are operating various small and medium-sized businesses received RM417,550 from the Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development Fund.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman presented the cheques to the 18 recipients after chairing the second meeting of Sabah's Bumiputera Economic Council.

"Teraju has approved RM1.59 billion to implement 482 projects including in Sabah with total private investments value of RM13.29 million in the country since inception of the Facilitation Fund in 2012.

"It was learnt that the hundreds of projects involved in boosting their businesses like renovations of their premises, buying necessary equipment and constructions of commercial lots in Sabah.

"In the Sabah context, those approved projects which included the seven local companies, have provided 3,700 employment opportunities to the local people," he said.

It was learnt from Teraju officials that the approved projects of the seven companies includes renovating own business premises, constructing a two-storey commercial lots, setting up a one-stop-centre, enhancing a one-storey warehouse and purchasing certain technical equipment, among others.

Under the Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development Fund, Musa said a total of RM15 million has been allocated to state authorities and regional economic corridors such as Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia) to channel the funding to their respective small and micro entrepreneurs to empower their participation and involvement in Bumiputera entrepreneurial fields.

In this respect, he said Teraju has been working closely with Sedia to provide the funds that have helped a total of 94 local entrepreneurs, as of date, including the 11 Sabahan individuals who received Teraju funds.

Following this, Musa witnessed the exchange of document between Teraju represented by its Chief Executive Officer Datuk Husni Salleh and Sedia represented by its Chief Executive cum President Datuk Dr Mohd Yaakub Johari to continue working together in assisting Bumiputera entrepreneurs in Sabah by providing monetary assistance via the Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development Fund.

Apart from these, Musa said Sabah GLC Talent Development programme that is an initiative between Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) and Teraju with cooperation rendered by Sabah Economic Planning Unit (Upen) to produce high potential of human capital among the State senior management teams.

"The training in senior management would be placed in several government-linked companies (GLC) to be exposed on best practices, expanding the professional network and contributing to the transfer of knowledge and technology in developing and carrying out high impact projects.

"Beginning Sept this year, two candidates from Sabah GLC Talent Development Programme will be placed at Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Teraju.

"In the aspect of empowering Bumiputera education, Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera (YPPB) under the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Roadmap (BETR) programme benefitted 1,611 locals to take up various education schemes and acquiring living skills," he said.

YPPB was launched to focus on the strengthening of Bumiputera capacity building through academic (Peneraju Tunas), vocational education (Peneraju Skil) and professional certification (Peneraju Professional) in line with Malaysia's vision to achieve high income status by 2020 as well as to ensure that the capabilities and expertise of Bumiputera will continue to develop competitively at the global level.

At the same occasion, Musa said 14 Sabahans received letters of offer from YPPB to further their tertiary education so as to bring about added progress for Sabah.

To consolidate a platform of business premises from Bumiputera entrepreneurs here, he revealed that Sedcovest Holidings Sdn Bhd which is a subsidiary company under the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) and City Hall as the land owner will be working together in rebuilding the Anjung Selera Tanjung Lipat.

Musa launched the project costing RM13.5 million to rebuild the food court, a 2.47-acre redevelopment which offers 51,130 sq ft of tenantable space for Bumiputera entrepreneurs in food and beverage, retail and service sectors.

"The construction of the project will begin this month and expected to be completed in Dec 2018.

"Upon completion, Anjung Selera with the new facelift would provide business opportunities for over 64 Bumiputera entrepreneurs and more than 200 jobs opportunities to the locals," Musa said.

Earlier, he also witnessed an exchange of documents between Teraju and Sedcovest Holdings Sdn Bhd represented by its Chairman Datuk James Ratib.

Also present were State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman, Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, State Finance Assistant Minister Datuk Ramlee Marahaban, Industrial Development Assistant Minister Datuk Bolkiah Ismail, Upen Sabah director Datuk Osman Jamal, Sedco Group General Manager Pg Saifuddin Pg Tahir, Sedcovest Holdings Sdn Bhd Chairman Datuk James Ratib and other senior officials. - Hayati Dzulkifli
